What do you get when you combine a world class orchestra, leading vocalists, a big band and dancers dressed from the last century? You get ‘Sounds of the 1920s’ part of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s Friday Night Classics series. I attended as part of the CBSO Youth Ambassadors scheme, and had a fabulous night – a bit of contrast from the last Beethoven concert!
The concert was presented by the guest conductor, and the two vocalists – with wit and flair it proved really exciting and entertaining evening. Everything from Gershwin with swish solos from the orchestra, to Weill’s dark humoured Mack the Knife.
Musicians in wigs, 20s inspired swim suits, flapper dresses, the CBSO gave a bit of everything!
